Several high-ranking officials obtained the scroll in which Jeremiah had preserved God's words to him. As it was read to King Jehoiakim, he defiantly cut the scroll with his knife, tossing the pieces into his fireplace. In addition, he sent a man to arrest Jeremiah and Baruch, but God had hid them. (Jer. 36:1-32)
